The Mighty Mouse: A Review...

Well there...

It seems the mighty mouse ain't so mighty after all. I took a trip to the Apple store earlier since I happened to be in White Plains, and one of the things I played around with was the mighty mouse. I learned a few things. First: the side buttons are very annoying and I will probably never use them. Second: Apple's design teams can in fact make stupid decisions. Third: I probably won't be buying this "mighty" mouse.

The two squeeze buttons don't give enough response to let you know that they've been squeezed, it's pretty frustrating. The scroll ball on the other hand is pretty nifty, you can go up/down or right/left or diagonal & you can do a sorta circle motion with it by rotating it 360 degrees (this really needs work). But it's a metal ball, which is quite cool & you can click down on it, thus adding another button. On Apple's design mistake, there's a huge problem in my opinion with this mouse: you push down the entire shell in order for the mouse to click... sure it makes the mouse look cool from above, but the response is a bit too sensitive for my taste, and personally, I just don't see the point to that, why have areas push down when you don't need to? The Might Mouse does however win a coolness point for the fact that you can program the buttons, and could do something like set up a task with automator & mouse button it... oh wait, actually, I just remembered you can do that with the keyboard too... so where's the MM's coolness factor now? unfortunately only in the scroll ball... hey wait, I just remembered, I can do all the fun scrolling stuff with my laptop anyway (well besides the 360/square thing)... the worst part about it: it's wired. That's right, it has a wire; it is not wireless.

At $49 (or $44 w/ your education discount) the mighty mouse isn't even close to being worth the price, in fact I think you'd be hard pressed to justify any price above $30 for it.

The verdict: here's an Apple product I don't like.

The Good News: My loan money should be in my hands next week... that will mean a powerbook... can't wait.
